Smart Start is the nation's premier provider of ignition interlock services and technology.  Our newest device, the SSI 20/20, is a positive identification unit which captures digital pictures of the test taker.

Everyday, our ignition interlock device prevents intoxicated drivers from endangering themselves, their families, and fellow citizens.

Currently there are 10 locations in the State of Indiana that are certified to install and maintain Smart Start interlock devices.

With over 80% of all interlock devices in Indiana supplied by Smart Start, we are the smart choice for both monitored drivers and court/public safety authorities.

How the Program Works

First, we install a breath analyzer on your

vehicle that is electronically connected

to the ignition. This device, the SSI 20/20,

is about the size of a cellular phone.

Next, when you breathe into the unit for

several seconds, it measures your breath

alcohol level and compares it with

predetermined limits.  If your breath

concentration (BrAC) is over the authorized

limit, your vehicle will not start.

If your (BrAc) is within the allowable range

you're on your way.  Then, as you are

driving, you will be required to take periodic

"rolling retests".

Once a month, take your vehicle to a local

Smart Start Center.  There, our certified

technicians will service your Smart Start

Ignition Interlock Device and schedule your

next appointment.  It's that simple.
